Freedom through the ages

The focus of the bookend pair is freedom and how it has changed in the last few decades. The layers reflect the complexity on the one hand and the individuality of freedom on the other.

Concept

The supports of the book supports also symbolize the supports of society, because without them the object would collapse and would have no support. This reflects the freedom of the community, because freedom also means allowing others their freedoms, even if it restricts your own. Only with this interrelationship there can be collective freedom.

The cutouts show that not only does each topic arise on its own, but a symbiosis arises between them, which influences the entire image of freedom at the present/the past.

While the plates of the bookend that symbolizes the present are straight on the outside and the recesses are angular, the book support that represents the past is exactly the opposite. This reflects the world view back then/today: In the past, everyone had to fit into a norm, even if every person was different. Nowadays, everyone wants to be unique and individual, even though everyone is basically the same.

The individual layers address topics such as: war, images of women, freedom of expression, church, social media, beauty ideals and social norms, which are presented as a collage of images, text, drawings and writing.
